There’s a new kid on the block that goes by the name of “Threads” and it looks an awful lot like Twitter.
The new app has already seen ten million users sign up for Meta’s latest social media platform which is widely touted to become the “Twitter killer”.
But what do we know so far?
Threads allow users to post up to 500 characters and will be predominately text-based, unlike Instagram, in which the two apps are linked. Users are able to include images with their posts, but the main focus is on the text element.
The similarities to Twitter don’t stop there either, users have the ability to “repost” another post, or “quote” it – these sharing functions are obviously very similar to “retweets” and “quote retweets” on Twitter.
Where it stands out from Twitter, in founder Mark Zuckerberg’s eyes, is Threads being a “friendly” platform. In recent months, since Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter, it has found itself in a controversial spot on more than one occasion.
Threads is a standalone app, but new users will log in via their existing Instagram account, with that username being carried over. With accounts being linked to their Instagram, it is wondered whether this will help curb the trolling that Twitter has become synonymous with.
Elon Musk has responded to the launch with a pretty scathing comment:
“It is infinitely preferable to be attacked by strangers on Twitter than indulge in the false happiness of hide-the-pain Instagram”.
Zuckerberg also noted that this is only the “initial version” of Threads, with extra features planned in the coming months, including the ability to interact with people on other social media apps. Whether the interaction is limited to Meta-only apps (Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp) is not known at the time of writing.
Meta’s Threads is now available to download in the UK, but is not yet available in the EU due to regulatory uncertainty – it is expected to be available soon however.
It’s too early to call whether Threads will become the app that finishes off Twitter. It certainly looks like it can do what its biggest rival can, but are users willing to integrate themselves into yet another new social platform?
